one year of geektechnique 2.0 (poll!)

It’s a coincedence I came across this fact… but well, one year ago, after two weeks of hard work enjoying a vacation and doing some work on my new website, this site went live in it’s current form/format.

LIVE! (blogpost from exactly one year ago)

the usual GT2.0 fan grrls *^-^*

In the past year, I burned 328.2GB of webtraffic(mind you, that is webtraffic, no movies or other binaries), I did switch servers and co-located it professionally and such and also in other aspects it’s been a splendid year. :-)

(about the webtraffic, the year prior to that, I burned 32.96GB in one year of which 19.4GB was from march 1st to 25th…)

...and if you want to see what a year on geektechnique looks like, check my archive and my projectlab (there are older projects in there, but most of them took place in the last year)

So what do you think? Just continue like we do now?

continue like we do now?

geez man, where's geektechnique 3.0???

and the results of the previous poll:

fight for your right for having obsolete gear!

Let’s stay in Japan for a while, shall we?

A little while back I wrote about some silly law which will prohibit the sale of 2nd hand electronics in Japan.

Now, what do you do if you’re a vintage electronics (never mind if it’s synthesizers and/or computerequipment) geek? Indeed, you go out and protest! fight for your right! (for having obsolete gear!)

Things that are in danger of vanishing because of Electric Appliance and Materials law exhibition

In short, the law is about selling of electric appliances and materials that are produced before April 1st 2001 and do not accommodate the new standard is prohibited. Radio cassette players featuring in this exhibition are surely one of them. By the way, punishment for violation of this law is “penal servitude of one year or less, or penalty of one million Japanese yen or less. Or, both” (Article 57).

article up on PingMag

For the ever excellent PingMag I wrote an article about the two Pecha Kucha nights here in Holland.

click to go the article

For me, this whole rush called Pecha Kucha now is complete. Getting the concept to Groningen was one step, getting it back to Tokyo was the next one :-)

Oh man, I can’t tell you how glad I am *^-^*

Oh, don’t forget to check out the Japanese version as well…

Bizarro Japanese kids show from the 60s

What would the Teletubbies look like if they were on PCP? Probably something like this...

The show is called ‘Kure Kure Takora’ which translates to something like ‘Gimme Gimme Octopus’. It’s an insane 60s Japanese TV show for kids, starring an octopus and a peanut who are in love with the same walrus. It boggles the mind with it’s impenetrable story lines and bizarro characters…

...rrrrright… uhu

xoxo!

I came across this in my bookmarks and I must’ve thought I passed it to nijne somehow… ;-)

Well, anyways, this is one of those sites where I have a hard time explaining why I like it. I just like it, streetart, netcult, whatever… I just love browsing the pics…

Pecha Kucha night Groningen has been a blast!

After I first came across Pecha Kucha night on the excellent PingMag, everything around this magical evening with a magical format, which originated in Tokyo, has been a blast, and so was last night! When we had our first Pecha Kucha night in my hometown Groningen.

The audience (small part of it, the place was packed!)

This must be a first, having a band, Une in 2 slots of the Pecha Kucha night! :-) (and yes, that’s my little green ibook, on which I made the Keynote-presentation)

And another first for a Pecha Kucha night I guess… After each presentation we had these two loonies, Gunther & Umtzi, who got 20 seconds to react on the just given presentation… Only thing was, one slot wasn’t filled (the presenter simply wasn’t there) and so Gunther & Umtzi all of a sudden got a whole 6:40 to entertain the audience :D (which was a little too much for some of us…)

Anyways, it’s been marvelous and I can’t wait for Pecha Kucha night Groningen Volume 2!

geez... that's been a week without updates...

Oh dear… maybe I’m getting a little too busy lately *^-^*

Well, last wednesday I traveled to Rotterdam to attend the first Pecha Kucha night over there.

I put a couple of pics online on my Flickr-album, but I really need to upgrade to Flickr Pro anytime soon. To be able to put more pics online, I used my own gallery, so check that one out, if you want to see lots of pics ;-)

After that, I had some wonderful days in Amsterdam (here & here)
and I came back late fridaynight. *^-^*

Now I have a very busy week coming up this week, of course, one reason is the upcoming Pecha Kucha overhere in Groningen. I’m totally delighted we (that’s Nieuwe Garde) are able to organize this in Groningen… I can’t wait :-) (for people looking to attend this Pecha Kucha, check out this)

Anyways I’m not sure how much updates I can post this week… But I’m enjoying myself! :-) (that’s important to know, right? ;-)) and of course, expect photo-updates somewhere after coming thursday…

Gentoo x86_64^2

Well… this took me all weekend… (in between other things)

Getting some other CPUs is nice, I only didn’t think a complete reinstall would be necessary to get them going like they should. But in the end it seems quite logical too, officially I changed the architecture of the machine, which, of course, isn’t a very common thing… It went from i386 to x86_64

So after a few days with my old kernel and install, this weekend was the time to overhaul the system completely.

some totally utterly useless pics… ;-)

...which is one heck of a job, but… in the end it pays off… I’m working on it now for a couple of hours and weeeeeeeee! this thing is flying!

There’s not that much change to my desktop, I already ran Gnome 2.12, but with Gentoo 2006.0 being released only a couple of days ago, with Gnome 2.12.2, there’s one difference… I ran Gnome 2.12 for quite some time already because I installed all kinds of masked packages... so the difference now is, it all works! ;-) And a fresh install (the previous install was one I kept on updating and is dating back to my previous machine I guess… so that must be like two years ago).

...and to top it off… a completely useless video, where I tried to capture the speed this thing is compiling right now… It should put a smile on any geeks face, but you’re not able to see it on the video... So, imagine this pic and then the text is scrolling really really fast… aight? *^_^*
