Miscellaneous
IBM GEARBOX MODEL 800 (7568-D40) Intel 486 DX2-50 processor card supporting up to 32MB of error correcting code memory, the XGA Display Adapter/A, up to four internal SCSI fixed disk drives and installation of an IBM FDDI Workstation Base Adapter (either fiber or copper), in a single attach station configuration. Disk drive recovery capability is provided by the OASAS software. IBM operating system products compatible with the 7568-D40:
(2) Earlier levels are no longer formally supported by IBM. In addition, certain D40 system hardware capabilities may not be supported by such earlier versions (for example, DOS Version 3.3 supports no more than two fixed disk drives). Use of OS/2 SE and EE Versions 1.2 and 1.3 will result in a "system hang" problem when Control-Alt-Delete (C-A-D) is entered. If C-A-D is entered, the system must be reset or powered down and restarted. This is the same as on the previous C40 system. GEARBOX Language Extensions are available for various
operating systems. Language Extensions provide the ability to take full
advantage of the unique error notification and orderly shutdown/startup
capabilities of the GEARBOX Model 800 system.
COMPATIBILITY: The 7568-D40 is compatible with earlier models of the GEARBOX Model 800. The 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card is compatible with and may be installed in earlier versions of the Model 800. Full support for 8MB memory modules and for system memory greater than 16MB requires that this feature be installed in earlier Model 800 systems. The 7568-D40, and earlier systems with the 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card installed, do not support the 0-16MB Extended Memory Adapter (#6345) Initial setup and loading of diagnostic software on the D40 system with no DASD require the use of the Setup and Service Device (#6230). Installation of supported PS/2 form factor Micro Channel adapters in the GEARBOX Model 800 system require the use of the applicable interposer card to interface with the system backplane. Available interposer cards are feature numbers 6224, 6225 and 6875. Support for the PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A requires that the System Resource Card Graphics Support Upgrade (#6886) be installed on earlier models of the GEARBOX Model 800. Support for the XGA Display Adapter/A (and for all other adapters that exclusively use 32-bit slots) also requires that the 32-Bit Micro Channel Adapter Interposer (#6875) be used when installing these adapters. Using a 16-Bit Micro Channel Adapter feature (#6224) may lead to functional problems related to a specific adapter's use of a memory block above the 16MB level. Adapters that require 32-bit slots should be used only with the 32-Bit Micro Channel Adapter Interposer. 32-bit Micro Channel adapters that can be installed in either 16- or 32-bit slots may have improved functional performance if they are installed using a 32-Bit Micro Channel Adapter Interposer. Installation of the 7568 Auxiliary DASD Module is supported only in C40 or D40 systems, or in 040 or 150 systems that have had either the 80486 Processor Card Upgrade Kit (#6543) or the 486 DX2-50MHz Processor Card Upgrade (#6872) installed on the system. Installation of the 7568 Auxiliary DASD Module also requires that the base system have a Disk Module installed, either as part of the original system or as the Disk Module feature (#6222). Installation of the 400MB or 1.0GB SCSI Fixed Disk Drives (#6873 and #6874 respectively) in earlier 040 or 150 systems requires Reference Diskette Version 1.20 for proper setup and diagnostic support. Diagnostics for these systems does not report the capacity of a defective disk drive. o Mixing of 4MB and 8MB Memory Modules Prohibited All memory modules installed on the processor card of the D40 system or on the 486 DX2 50MHz Processor Card feature installed in earlier GEARBOX models, must be of the same type (4MB or 8MB). The mixing of 4MB and 8MB modules on a single processor card results in a system memory error. Support of system memory levels above 16MB, therefore, requires that all modules on the processor card be the 8MB type. o Maximum Memory: There are five memory module positions on the processor card. One of these positions is for a memory module that is dedicated to providing error correcting code (ECC) capability, and is therefore not available as system memory. This leaves four module positions that are available for system memory. For 7568-D40 systems the total maximum system memory is 32MB. This level requires installation of five of the 8MB memory modules (one for the ECC position and four for system memory). o Available User Memory
1. BIOS Mapping
2. Loss of Split Memory
3. Memory "Gap" Support
o Summary
32MB = 32768KB Total system memory
Net: Memory available to the user can be up to 2.375MB less than total system memory. This applies at total memory levels of 16MB or greater, if an adapter requires use of the 2MB "gap". Thus system memory versus memory available to the user will be as follows for the various levels of installed memory. SYSTEM MEMORY (MB) USER MEMORY (MB)
No power cord is provided with the GEARBOX products. Direct wiring to an applicable power source must be provided by the customer. Installation of supported PS/2 form factor Micro Channel adapters in the GEARBOX Model 800 system require the use of the applicable interposer card to interface with the system backplane. Available interposer cards are feature numbers 6224, 6225 and 6875. Three Port Cable Assembly provides a means for connection from the system resource card to various other standard connectors. The GEARBOX Model 800 is a direct-wire system, using a customer-provided power cable to an applicable power source. Additional diagnostic and defective part isolation assistance is available in the Maintenance Information publication (S15F-8611), which may be purchased separately. If this publication has been purchased previously, a complete revision to the page content may be purchased separately (#6879) (U.S. English).
GEARBOX MODEL 800 (7568-C40)
Attachment support for the PS/2 3.5-inch Rewritable Optical Drive in the PS/2 SCSI Storage Enclosure requires that GEARBOX Model 800 systems shipped from IBM before December 1990, have the PF1193 BIOS and Reference Diskette Upgrade installed. LIMITATIONS:
Use of Versions 1.2 and 1.3 of these products will result in a "system hang" problem if Control-Alt-Delete (C-A-D) is entered through the keyboard. C-A-D should not normally be used with the GEARBOX Model 800. The key switch "Reset" position is provided for this purpose. If C-A-D is entered, the system will have to be powered down and restarted, or the key switch can be used to reset the system. Machine Type 7568 -- Installation and Operation

GEARBOX MODEL 800 (7568-040/150)
BASE SYSTEM
The GEARBOX Model 800 is based on an Intel 80386 microprocessor, operating at 25 MHz, and supports an optional 80387 Math Co-Processor. The base memory is 8MB on the Model 150, or 4MB (expandable to 8MB) on the Model 040. In addition, the Model 800 will support the 0-16MB Extended Memory Adapter (#6345). All memory is Error Correcting Code (ECC). Performance is further enhanced through 32KB of Cache Memory on the Processor Card, a 120MB SCSI Disk Drive with 23ms access time, and 0.5MB of DASD Cache Memory on the Disk/Diskette Adapter Card. A second 120MB Disk Drive is an optional feature. The Disk/Diskette Adapter Card also contains an external SCSI interface for customer use. Use of this interface requires that the customer provide a software device driver for interface to the intended operating system. No such software device driver file is provided with the system. The GEARBOX Model 800 is supported by IBM PC DOS (Version 3.30/4.0) and OS/2 (SE Version 1.1/1.2 and EE Version 1.1/1.2) operating systems. Language extensions for PC DOS and OS/2 will be available in March of 1990, to take full advantage of the unique error notification and orderly shut-down/start-up capabilities of the system. Five IBM personal computer software languages are supported:
-300 total watt worldwide, autoranging power supply, with
two fans to assure system cooling.
NOTE: Either the internal battery or an EVM (with connected external DC voltage source) must be ordered and installed to retain system set up information during periods when the system is shutdown. A Three Port Cable Assembly is included for connection from the System Resource Card in the system to various other standard connectors (serial parallel). The standard system can be panel mounted. Rack mounting is also available. Two configurations of the GEARBOX Model 800 are available. The configurations and brief content summary are as follows. MACHINE TYPE 7568 MODEL 040
NOTE: Initial set-up and loading of diagnostic software on the Model 040 requires the use of the Set-Up and Service Device (#6230). MACHINE TYPE 7568 MODEL 150
OPERATING SYSTEM STATEMENT OF DIRECTION: IBM intends to provide a future Advanced Interactive Executive PS/2 (AIX (TM) PS/2) operating system enhancement that will support the GEARBOX Model 800. The GEARBOX Model 800 supports the following previously announced features. All these feature cards require one of the Micro Channel adapter features (#6224 or #6225) for installation, except the 0-16MB Extended Memory Adapter (#6245). BATTERY, NICAD (INTERNAL) (#6221): This internally mounted battery allows continuous operation through brief main power interruptions (nominal 1.5 seconds default). Also, if the interruption continues beyond this period, the battery maintains DC voltages to allow the system to perform an orderly shutdown. NOTE 1: Either this battery or an EVM (#6231 or #6528) must be ordered and installed to retain system set up information during periods when the system is shut down. NOTE 2: Under hardware control the time for shutdown is limited to a maximum of 10 seconds. Control of shutdown may be conveyed to software, but even then, depending on the load on the power supply, the battery capacity, and thus the time for shutdown, may be limited to a 10 second period. If this is not adequate for the operating system and applications running on the system, the customer should provide external battery backup, which requires an External Voltage Module (#6231 or #6528). DISK MODULE (#6222): The Disk Module allows for adding DASD to a Model 040. The Disk Module consists of a double-wide shroud and a Disk/Diskette Adapter Card, to be plugged into the Model 040 frame in place of two empty card shrouds. The Disk/Diskette Adapter Card contains 0.5MB of DASD Cache Memory, and supports up to two 120MB Disk Drives and a 1.44MB Diskette Drive installed inside the shroud. The Disk/Diskette Adapter Card also contains an external SCSI interface for customer use. Use of this interface requires that the customer provide a software device driver for interface to the intended operating system. No such software device driver is provided with the system or feature. 120MB DISK DRIVE (#6223): The 120MB Disk Drive is the same as the drive that comes standard on the Model 150. The 120MB Disk Drive can be used along with the Disk Module to provide a disk drive on the Model 040, or can be added to the Model 150 to provide a total of 240MB of Disk Drive capacity. 16 BIT MCA ADAPTER (#6224): The 16 Bit Micro Channel Adapter allows the plugging of selected 16 bit Micro Channel cards with a PS/2 form factor into the GEARBOX Model 800 Backplane. The Display Adapter 8514/A (#4054) must use the 16 Bit Micro Channel Video Adapter (#6225) for installation in the GEARBOX Model 800. NOTE:
16 BIT MCA VIDEO ADAPTER (#6225): This 16 Bit Micro Channel Video adapter is required for installing the Display Adapter 8514/A (#4054) in the system. NOTE: PS/2 adapters should not be installed in the slot #9 position. This is due to limitations with setup and diagnostic code recognizing such adapters in that position. 1.44MB DISKETTE DRIVE (SLIM-LINE) (#6229): The 1.44MB Diskette Drive is the same as that which comes installed on the Model 150. The 1.44MB Diskette Drive can be used along with the Disk Module (#6222) to provide diskette function on a Model 040. The Model 150 is limited to one diskette drive and cannot accept the 1.44MB Diskette Drive in addition to the already installed device. SETUP AND SERVICE DEVICE (#6230): The Setup and Service Device is a stand-alone 1.44MB, 3.5-inch diskette drive and cable in an enclosure, which must be used during initial system set-up and to load diagnostics and record test results on a Model 040 (no DASD model). The cable plugs into a port on the System Resource Card. EXTERNAL VOLTAGE MODULES (#6231 AND #6528): These EVM features allow the connection of an external DC voltage source either for additional battery backup to the main AC power, or as a main DC power source. EVM #6231 must be used when the external source is 24 volts. EVM #6528 must be used when the external source is 48 or 60 volts. No other external voltages are to be used as a main source or as a backup. NOTE: Either one of these EVMs (with a connected external DC voltage source), or the internal nicad battery (#6221) must be ordered and installed to retain system set up information during periods when the system is shut down. CARD SHROUD (MACHINE TYPE 7568) (#6530): This Card Shroud is the same as those that come standard on the system. The Card Shroud permits installation of adapter cards in extra shrouds for immediate insertion in a GEARBOX Model 800 system, without having to open an installed shroud/card assembly for replacement of the card in the shroud. The Card Shroud could also be used to fill the open positions if the Disk Module were to be removed from a Model 150 system (two Card Shrouds would be needed). NOTE: The Card Shroud (#6530) is not compatible with the IBM 7552 Industrial Computer Processor and System Resource cards, due to different locations of openings in the shroud for LED indicators. 80387 MATH CO-PROCESSOR (25 MHZ) (INDUSTRIAL) (#6532): This option is installed in the Math Co-Processor socket on the Processor Card, and does not require an expansion slot. The 80387 Math Co-Processor (Industrial) has been modified to meet the environmental requirements of the GEARBOX system. Power Supply Values
