MODEM INSTALLATION PROGRAM - USER GUIDE

                                 Revision 2.41

                   Copyright (c) 1995, AT&T Paradyne Corp.

                        Revision Date: February 22, 1995

The AT&T KeepInTouch(tm) Card modem INSTALL program uncompresses and
copies the KIT Utilities to your hard drive. Once completed, you can
use the autoconfigure option to setup your system to automatically
configure the KIT card modem by finding an available IRQ, COM port,
and memory window. You can update the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
with this information so that the KIT card will always be configured
as an I/O device when you power-up the system.

NOTE: The autoconfigure option is not necessary if your PC already
has PCMCIA Card & Socket Services drivers that configure the
KIT card modem or if you are running the KIT card from the OS/2
operating system. The autoconfigure option requires additional
DOS environment memory space to execute properly. Add or modify
the following line in your CONFIG.SYS file and reboot your
           system:
                   SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /p /e:2048

The "/e:2048" parameter provides a 2 Kbyte buffer for the DOS
           environment memory space.

NOTE: If you are installing on a PC which has an OS/2 operating system:

          1. Follow steps 1 and 2 below to copy the necessary files to disk.
          2. Follow the "Installation Procedure" outlined in the "OS/2
Client Device Driver" section of the "readme.txt" file.

    ***********************************************************************
To install your KIT utilities and configure the modem, follow the steps
    below:

    1) Run INSTALL on the KIT Utilities by typing the following command at
       the DOS prompt:
         C:\> a:\install

NOTE: If INSTALL fails to execute, your system probably lacks hard
disk space to create the temporary directory for Install to
execute. You need a minimum of 3 Mbytes of disk space in
order to execute Install. Abort installation and increase
your hard drive space. An error message indicating to load
the a disk into drive A: or drive B: may appear on your screen.
Ignore this message and abort installation to increase your
             disk space.

    2) From the main menu of the Install program, select the option:
          "Install KIT Utilities"

This option will copy the files on the KIT Utilities disk to the
       specified directory.

       ******************************** NOTE ******************************
If your system has PCMCIA drivers already loaded, the following steps
may not be necessary. PCMCIA drivers are called "Card Services &
Socket Services." If these drivers were installed, they may already
have the capability of enabling the KIT card modem.

You can examine and test your system for PCMCIA drivers by reading
your system's documentation referring to PCMCIA drivers, and ensuring
that these drivers were installed (or enabled if they are ROM-based).
Most PCMCIA drivers are loaded through the CONFIG.SYS file when the
system is powered ON. You can examine your CONFIG.SYS file to
determine if these drivers are loaded.

Insert the KIT card modem into one of the PCMCIA slots after the
system has been powered ON. You may here an audible "beep" from
your system's speaker when the modem is inserted. This "beep"
implies that the PCMCIA drivers have recognized and configured
       the KIT card modem.

       ********************************************************************

    3) If installation completed with no problems and your system does NOT
have PCMCIA drivers installed, select the "Configure the KIT Card
Modem" option to configure the modem specifically for your system.

NOTE: This option may lockup the system if the DOS environment memory
space is too small. If the system locks up, reboot the system
and update the DOS environment space by adding or modifying the
following line to the CONFIG.SYS file on the boot drive:
                        SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /p /e:2048

then reboot the system and run INSTALL again and perform the
              "Configure..." option.
The "/e:2048" parameter of the SHELL command provides a 2 Kbyte
buffer for the DOS environment memory space.

    4) The configure option will prompt you for information necessary to
determine how the KIT modem will be initialized upon powering up your
system. Answer these questions based on your desired setup for the
KIT card modem on your system.

When prompted to "Configure KIT's attribute memory", the preferred
option should be to "Select an Upper Memory Block...". This option
will also install the HOTKIT driver which will support hot insertion
for the KIT card modem. Hot insertion will automatically configure
the KIT card modem whenever it is inserted into the desired PCMCIA
slot selected for your system. If you select an Extended Memory
Block, then the KIT card modem can only be configured during powering
up or re-booting your system with the KIT card modem present in the
desired PCMCIA slot, or by running the CONFIG program with the correct
       parameters necessary for your system.

When prompted to "Identify PCMCIA Socket used for KIT", indicate which
slot the KIT card modem will always be installed in. If your system
only has one PCMCIA slot, then select socket one.

    5) If your KIT card modem configured successfully, then the KIT setup
should indicate which serial port was assigned to the KIT card
       modem (i.e. COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4). Always identify this serial
port in any application that must communicate with the KIT card modem.
(If it does not configure successfully, see the "Troubleshooting
       Problems area below.)

    6) In order to always initialize the KIT card modem, your system's
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files will require modification. If you
choose not to modify these files, then you must manually execute
the CONFIG program with the correct parameters to enable the KIT card
       modem.

When you choose to modify the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files on your
system, a backup copy of these files will be saved in case you want
to restore them. The updated configuration will automatically
configure the KIT card modem when the system is powered up or rebooted.

    7) Select "Finished Installation" to terminate the installation and
configuration of the KIT card modem.

Reboot your system in order to ensure the KIT card modem is
configuration. Your modem should now be ready for use.

If problems occur during installing or configuring your KIT card modem,
keep in mind the following troubleshooting ideas:

o Configuration of the KIT card modem may require changes to your PC's
AUTOEXEC.BAT file. In order to invoke these changes, reboot your PC
with the KIT card modem installed.

o To re-configure the KIT card modem, perform the following steps:
        - Remove CONFIG.EXE and HOTKIT.COM from AUTOEXEC.BAT (if they had
been added to this file during the previous configuration of the
          KIT card modem).
        - Re-cycle power to your PC (to erase these programs from memory).
        - Change directory to your KIT utilities directory (if you chose the
default, this directory will be C:\KIT).
        - Type INSTALL at the DOS prompt and select "Configure the KIT Card
Modem" option. Follow the instructions previously described for
          this option.

o No response when Configure option selected:
The configure option may not run if the PC is not recognized or if
Stacker or DoubleSpace are running on yuor computer. In this case,
contact your PC manufaturer to determine if PCMCIA system drivers are
available to enable the KIT card modem.

    o Low Battery problems:
As the laptop battery voltage drops below a certain voltage, the
system may be operational, but the KIT card modem could have a
problem drawing enough power to operate. Connect the system's DC
power adapter to ensure stability of the power supplied to the KIT
       card modem.

o Hot insertion and removal problem:
There must be at least a 5 second delay between insertion and removal
of the KIT card modem in the PCMCIA slot. If your PC has an audio
speaker that is enabled, you should be able to hear a beep when you
insert the KIT card modem into the PCMCIA slot.

o Some PCs perform "ROM Shadowing" and "Memory Relocation" in an
attempt to make the PC execute programs faster. Sometimes, these
features conflict with PCMCIA cards, such as the KIT card modem.
Using your PC's CMOS setup utility, disable such features, save the
       setup and reboot the PC.

o If you have PCMCIA software drivers that support the KIT card modem
installed on your PC, try using the modem without the INSTALL auto-
configuration option or the CONFIG utility. If your communication
software does not work with the KIT card modem, check the COM
       port settings (i.e. COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4) and the IRQ assigned
(i.e. 3,4,5, etc.) to the COM port. Some drivers will use another IRQ
instead of the default. Therefore the system's port setup must be
       consistent with the driver's settings.

o Ensure that no other application uses the same PC memory area
required by the KIT modem. Otherwise a memory conflict will occur.
The KIT card modem requires the exclusive use of a 4k-byte block
of upper memory starting at some base address in memory. The base
address usually in upper memory, between memory address range 640
Kbytes to 1 Megabytes. The actual value depends on the PCMCIA driver
software settings that came with your PC. Determine the base address
       from the PCMCIA driver's documentation.

Next, exclude that range of memory addresses from your extended
memory manager by using a command in CONFIG.SYS such as:

       DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=D000-DFFF

This command works for EMM386 which is supplied with DOS,
and reserves D000 to DFFF for KIT use.

Please consult your extended memory manager's documentation
if you use something different than EMM386.EXE.

You can attempt to use the modem at this point. If you still
experience difficulties, then you may need to remove the DOS=HIGH
or DOS=UMB command in the CONFIG.SYS file.

o If the KIT modem will not work using the PCMCIA software drivers
installed on your PC, and you have attempted to provide these
PCMCIA drivers command line options (as specified in your PC's
documentation) in order to get the KIT modem to work, then it is
possible that these PCMCIA drivers do not support the KIT modem.

To determine if this is the case, de-install the PCMCIA drivers by
commenting out the installation line(s) in CONFIG.SYS. You will need
to read your PC's documentation on PCMCIA drivers to determine which
       line(s) to remove.

Re-power the PC. Insert the KIT modem in the primary PCMCIA slot
and run the Modem Configuration Program (CONFIG) which is in the KIT
utilities directory (C:\KIT by default). Before running the CONFIG
utility, please read the README.TXT file also in the KIT utilities
directory for usage notes on the CONFIG program. You will probably
       enter something like:

          CONFIG COM2

This command should configure the modem on COM2. If the CONFIG
program responds with an error indicating that it cannot detect the
KIT card modem, then try again with the modem inserted in a different
PCMCIA slot or with different parameters. See the README.TXT file for
other parameters and usage of the KIT Utilities' CONFIG program.

On some PC systems, you may need to specify the memory address window
and COM port interrupt level in order to get the CONFIG program to
       work correctly (e.g. CONFIG START=D0000 COM2 SIRQ5).

If the CONFIG program presents any other error message then you may
refer to the Error Codes section of the README.TXT file in the KIT
Utilities directory for the cause and solution of the error, or
contact AT&T Paradyne's Technical Support Center at 1-800-237-0016
       for more assistance.
